Military Installations:

Military Installations

Given the relative size of the Colorado Springs area, it has more than its share of military installations. Colorado Springs is home to Peterson Air Force Base, the United States Air Force Academy, Fort Carson, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station and Schriever Air Force Base.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE (www.Peterson.AF.Mil)

Peterson is home to the 21st Space Wing (21 SW). The 21 SW is the Air Force's only organization providing missile warning and space control to unified commanders and combat forces worldwide. The 21st SW provides missile warning and space control to NORAD and U.S. Strategic Command through a network of command and control units and ground and space-based sensors operated by geographically separated units around the world.

As the host wing for Peterson AFB, the 21 SW provides operating support to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), United States Northern Command (NORTHCOM), Headquarters Air Force Space Command (AFSPC), the Army's Space and Missile Defense Command/ Army Strategic Command (SMDC/ARSTRAT), Cheyenne Mountain AFS, and the 302nd Airlift Wing and Air Force Reserve C-130 unit. The 21st SW also provides certain support functions for nearby Schriever AFB.

Peterson supports an active duty work force of approximately 6,565 from the US Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps as well as Canadian forces from the Army, Air Force and Navy.

Peterson is located on the southern end of Colorado Springs off of HWY 24, and is easily accessible by Academy Blvd, Powers, Blvd, and Platte Ave.

UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ACADEMY (www.USAFA.AF.Mil)

The staff and faculty of the United States Air Force Academy are charged with developing and inspiring future air and space leaders with a vision for tomorrow through academic and military instruction. The Academy prepares these future officers to assume the leadership roles of the 21st century. The Air Force Academy is an accredited college with programs ranging from Aerospace engineering to literature. The cadet corps is composed of 4,000 cadets, 1,000 active duty officers, 1,000 active duty enlisted and 41,000 civilian employees.

The Academy is located on 1,800 acres at the base of the Rockies and provides a beautiful location for both physical and mental training.

FORT CARSON (www.Carson.Army.Mil)

One of the Army's youngest installations, Fort Carson is known as the Mountain Post. The post is recognized as one of the world's premier locations to lead, train, and maintain while preparing soldiers to win on the battlefield. Fort Carson is home to the 7th Infantry Division, 10th Special Forces Group, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment (III Corps), and 3rd Brigade Combat Team (4th Infantry Division). 43rd Area Support Group supports the major units on post.

Fort Carson is located on the southern end of Colorado Springs between Interstate 25 and HWY 115.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE (http://www.Schriever.AF.Mil/)

Schriever AFB is the home of the 50th Space Wing, the Space Warfare Center, the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization's Joint National Integration Center, 310th Space Group and numerous tenant organizations.

The 50th Space Wing's mission is to command and control Department of Defense satellites and operate a worldwide network to control Air Force and other U.S. and allied satellites. The other units at Schriever also perform space missions. Schriever is unique in that they have no flight line and no aircraft flying mission.

Some of the services normally provided at most Air Force bases are not available on Schriever; however, Peterson AFB is a full service base and offers full medical and dental clinics, a commissary, base exchange and other support functions.

Nearly 4,800 personnel work on Schriever AFB, located approximately 10 miles east of Colorado Springs on HWY 24.

CHEYENNE MOUNTAIN AIR FORCE STATION (https://www.CheyenneMountain.AF.Mil/)

Cheyenne Mountain AFS is the home of North American Aerospace Defense Command's Command Center. The inside of the 100 million-year-old mountain was excavated in the early 1960s to make room for the 15 steel buildings that house the computers, communications equipment, display screens, aerospace operations analysts and technicians, and everything needed to keep track of missiles, air and space vehicles approaching North America or our allies. The facility was moved in the mid-60s from an above-ground, vulnerable building in Colorado Springs to the granite-shielded security of Cheyenne Mountain, where it is provided increased survivability from all but a direct hit.

Cheyenne Mountain AF Station is located within Cheyenne mountain south of Fort Carson off of HWY 115.
